Rhinoplasty

The shape and size of the nose can transform the facial profile. Some nose shapes are considered more desirable than others, and if you’re one of the many people who are unhappy with the appearance of your nose, rhinoplasty may be a good option. At Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery – a division of U.S. Dermatology Partners, our knowledgeable cosmetic surgeons can help you explore options for changing the shape, size, or position of your nose, so you look and feel your best.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is surgery that changes the appearance of the nose. For this reason, it’s often referred to casually as a “nose job.” It can also be performed to repair noses after breaks and to improve breathing for those who struggle with issues like a deviated septum. The nose is made up of bone, cartilage, and soft tissue. Through rhinoplasty, a cosmetic surgeon can adjust the shape and appearance of all types of nasal tissue to deliver the desired results. From the size of the nose to the shape of the nostrils, rhinoplasty is an effective solution to achieve a range of cosmetic and medical results. There are three main types of rhinoplasty:

  • Primary rhinoplasty – This is the comprehensive, initial rhinoplasty that dramatically changes the structure and appearance of the nose, corrects breathing, and repairs irregularities in structure.
  • Revision rhinoplasty – This surgical treatment is recommended when the primary rhinoplasty procedure is unsuccessful. This procedure is recommended if the desired results aren’t achieved after the first treatment or the patient experiences breathing concerns post-procedure, they may need additional surgery.
  • Cleft rhinoplasty – Having a cleft lip or cleft palate can impact the shape of the nose. It’s important to work with a surgeon who has experience in cleft revision as well as cleft rhinoplasty to ensure this nuanced treatment is performed successfully.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

The most obvious benefit of cosmetic rhinoplasty is achieving the desired appearance of nose structures.

Additional rhinoplasty benefits include:

  • Creates a more symmetric or balanced facial appearance
  • Correct breathing issues
  • Improve sleep
  • Increase self-confidence
  • Long-lasting results

Recovery After Rhinoplasty

Immediately following surgery, your plastic surgeon bandages the nose to provide support and protection as the nose heals. In most cases, the exterior bandages will be removed at the first post-operative visit, and the nose drip pad will be removed and replaced by you at home. Your plastic surgeon will provide specific guidance following your procedure, so be sure to follow their specifications. You should rest for the first 48 hours after treatment, and most people need to stay home from work for at least the first week. Do not blow your nose for the first week after surgery. You should keep your head elevated for a few days even during sleep. You should limit exercise and other strenuous activities for several weeks up to a month, depending on your specific situation.

Risks Association with Rhinoplasty

Like any surgical procedure, there are risks associated, but when you choose a board-certified facial plastic surgeon with the appropriate skills and experience, it’s possible to safely receive rhinoplasty while feeling assured that risks will be minimized. Common risks of rhinoplasty surgery include trouble breathing, swelling, numbness, pain, and bleeding immediately following surgery and as the site heals for the first few days. Less common effects include infection and adverse response to anesthesia. Long-term risks include scarring, being unhappy with the final results, and other difficulties that lead to a need for revision rhinoplasty treatment.
